Importance of Law for the protection of Environment
Environmental Law and Policy has over recent past been subsumed into giving an "ecological nuance" to legal norms in public law, criminal law, private law and international law. There is a growing need for sustainable development which is regulated by innovative laws which enhance growth is environment-friendly. Concerted efforts are being taken by National and Provincial Governments to maintain the equilibrium by the means of legislations.

Why the Centre?
The Centre for Environment and Law is aimed at propagating and promoting discourse in the realm of environment and related legal issues. The Centre aims to provide a platform for stakeholders to collaborate over and study various policy decisions which impact the environment.

What the Centre Does?
Apart from reviewing legislative changes, the centre aims at real world impact by organizing seminars, workshops, debates amongst the various stakeholders, resource persons and policy makers focused on the issues of environmental law. The Centre also publishes the Environment, Law and Society Journal which curates academic works on enviro-legal issues.

The activities of the centre are planned and implemented by an active student body co-ordinated by a Student Convenor of the Centre, Mr. Sachin Sathyarajan. The volunteers of the centre are ably guided by the honorary director of the Centre, Dr(Prof.) M. C. Valson.

Activities of the Centre till date
1. Seminars Conducted
a. National Seminar on envisioning a Legal Framework for mainstreaming environmental conservation.
The objective of the seminar was to provide a platform for NGOs, scientists, think tanks, private players etc for a dynamic inter disciplinary approach for the evolution of a legal framework, apart from developing environmental advocacy and promote greater interests and awareness regarding the contemporary ecological challenges.
2. Other Events
a. Legislative Drafting Workshop
A workshop was organised to draft legislation on the Conservation of the Western Ghats in the light of the World People's Conference on Climate Change and Rights of Mother Earth 2010 and in reference to Madhav Gadgil Report and Kasturirangan Report.
b. Parliamentary Debate

The focus of Environment, Law & Society Journal is to curate scholarly and academic works which present a critical overview and analysis of developments in realm of environmental law, policy and practice.
