CENTRES- Centre for Law & Agriculture

ABOUT THE CENTER
Despite their significant position in the socio-economic fabric of the country the agriculture and other allied sectors receive hardly any attention from the legal academia. The Centre for Law and Agriculture (CLA), established at the National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS) in the year 2011, is an attempt to respond to the need for legal scholarship in the areas of agriculture, food, fisheries and animal husbandry. With its commitment to interdisciplinary study and bridge-building between legal academia and the domains of agriculture, food, fisheries and animal husbandry, the Centre aspires to be an incubator for new approaches to how law can best address the complex and cross-cutting issues in these areas. The Centre also addresses a critical need for systematic development of legal techniques and legal structures to address the legal, economic, social and ethical challenges presented by issues at the intersection of law and agriculture, fisheries, food, animal husbandry and other allied disciplines. The Centre proposes to

• Initiate studies and research projects on themes relevant to its focus areas.
• Organise seminars, colloquia, workshops and training programmes with the involvement of the members of the executive,   legislature and judiciary, the practitioners, policy makers, and other stakeholders of the agriculture, food, fisheries and animal    husbandry sectors for greater interface, exposure and capacity building.
• Provide valuable inputs for policy formulation as well as provide relevant data and information which may assist policy makers to    take informed decisions..
• Audit the impact and efficacy of laws relevant to the thrust areas of the Centre, monitor the implementation of the said laws and    suggest measures for improvement.

Mr. Jacob Joseph, Assistant Professor, NUALS is the Director (i/c) of the Centre.

Dr. Liji Samuel, Assistant Professor, NUALS is the Co-Director of the Centre.
